VLSCI Summer Internships in Life Sciences Computation 2011/12 - applications now closed

The VLSCI is now offering up to five full-time (or equivalent pro-rata) Internships in Life Sciences Computation over Summer 2011/12 to mathematics, biology and/or computer science students at Honours, Masters or Ph.D. level.

Job Description The VLSCI is seeking applications from students across all Victorian universities for five summer internship positions in life sciences computation. Successful candidates will work with VLSCI researchers on projects which align with the current key themes in the LSCC: High Throughput Genomics, Proteomics & Integrative Biology and/or Computational Imaging and/or support projects currently allocated resources on the VLSCI Peak Computing Facility.

Assignments could include implementing existing models or algorithms, porting existing codes, running scientific simulation software, developing mathematical and computational models and performing scientific research.

Required

  • Honours, Masters or PhD students in CS, Engineering, Mathematics, Biology or related at a university in Victoria;
  • At least 1 year experience programming in C, C++ or Java;
  • Permanent residency or Australian/NZ citizenship;
  • English: Intermediate.

Preferred

  • Additional experience programming in C, C++ or Java;
  • Experience programming in other languages (i.e. Matlab);
  • Experience in high performance computing (i.e. MPI, OpenMP);
  • Background in one or more relevant areas: structural biology, protein science, biomolecular modelling, bioinformatics, genomics, neuroscience, probability/statistics, machine learning, algorithms, differential equations, numerical analysis, mathematical modelling, etc.

Further information
Interns will be paid at the rate of a Research Assistant Grade 1 ($33.24 per hour) and employed through the host institution. The term of appointment is negotiable, with ten weeks regarded as the average.

It will be the responsibility of Ph.D. candidates to establish through their own institutions how such an internship would fit with leave of absence or study away conditions of their candidature. Candidates will also need to consider the income tax implications of any internship in relation to any other Ph.D. income they may be receiving, prior to accepting any internship offer.
