Life Sciences defined...

Under the terms of its contract, VLSCI is dedicated to supporting research in the 'Life Sciences' areas exclusively. The RAS Committee is charged with determining what is and what is not Life Sciences on a project by project basis. As a guide the following Fields of Research codes of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification are often considered to be Life Sciences but please remember the test is applied to the proposed project itself.

In Australia, the main Fields of Research which are classified as Life Sciences are:

Division 06 (all) Biological Sciences
Division 07 (all) Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences
Division 10

The following groups -

  • 1001 Agricultural Biotechnology
  • 1002 Environmental Biotechnology
  • 1003 Industrial Biotechnology
  • 1004 Medical Biotechnology
  • 100703 Nanobiotechnology
  • 100709 Nanomedicine
Division 11 (all) Medical and Health Sciences.

A project may also qualify if it can be demonstrated that it directly and substantially facilitates research that can be classified as Life Sciences-focussed yet not within these stated categories ie. the primary application or beneficiary of the project must be within the field of Life Sciences. In this situation, its strongly advised that the project application mention a specific Life Science researcher who has an interest in the project, ideally listed as a participant.
